Charles listened to three of the radios he’d modified as he disassembled a Fosk-ha helmet. With a little imagination, he could pretend he was back in college, taking apart and rebuilding gaming consoles for his roommates.

Thoroughness and patience were his virtues now. One piece at a time and don’t worry about a dang thing.

“Merc One for Momma Bear,” a static-covered voice said.

The reply was mostly squelch.

Charles adjusted the tuning knob, then heard the same voice on another radio he had set to another channel.

“Are you here?”

“Momma Bear reads you loud and clear,” a woman replied.

His heart leaped. He knew that voice!

That is Emily. For the love of God, I am listening to my wife!

He snatched up the receiver, then hesitated. What if he spooked them? What if his connection alerted the Fosk-ha to what was clearly a covert channel and got them killed?

“How are the little bears?” Merc One, Security Chief Halloran, asked. The gruff soldier sounded different—like his voice had too much reverb.

Tears ran down Charles’s face. His hands shook. Thank. You. God.

“They’re playing in the garden. I can see them from where I’m at, just like you suggested. Line of sight at all times,” Emily said.

Charles memorized every word she spoke, desperately afraid it would be the last he heard of her voice.

“Good girl, Momma Bear,” Halloran said. Something was wrong with his voice. Haunted tones inflected his words and there was a mechanical cadence that wasn’t like him—very slight, but detectable.

Staring at the radio mic didn’t give Charles the courage to make the call. Doubts surfaced like shadow creatures, little devils whispering in his ear that if he made a mistake, the Fosk-ha would know and punish the love of his life and his children.

“Tell me when you’re in position, Red,” Halloran said.

“I see them, Merc One,” another woman said.

Anna O’Mally. Charles recognized her voice too. The last time he had seen the security chief and the spy, they’d been mortally wounded.

But they were alive, and so was his family. Charles wasn’t sure if that knowledge made the decisions he had to make easier or harder.

“Geek One for Merc One,” he finally said.

Silence.

Radio static.

“How copy?” Charles asked.

“How did you get onto this frequency?” Halloran asked.

“I’ve been busy,” Charles said. “Can you hear me, Momma Bear?”

“Yes... Geek One,” Emily said, sounding embarrassed. “But you were never a geek to me. You know that, right? I’m not going to let him call you that if you don’t like it.”

That’s my Emily, always in charge, always ready to defend me. I’d forgotten she did that. His spirit soared at the simple words, and he wanted more than ever to sweep his wife up in his arms and gather their children close.

“I’m just glad to hear you,” Charles said, sniffling only when he let off the talk button. “How are the little bears?”

“They miss you.” Static flowed over Emily’s words.

He wanted to scream but stared at the blocky, reverse-engineered comms device. What a miracle this was! Anything is possible, it whispered.

We don’t know until we try.
